The Coachella Valley Economic Partnership filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on March 28, 2026. A federal judge closed the case on May 5, creditors paid nothing, roughly a year after the organization’s executive committee had voted to dissolve. As of July 31, 2026, three regional sources still presented CVEP as a going concern: the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce carried a present-tense member listing, LinkedIn showed an active company page with an employee count, and the Desert Healthcare District’s partner page still listed CVEP’s address and phone number and linked to cvep.com, which is offline. None of these listings is careless in the ordinary sense. Each was accurate when written, and retiring an entry after the organization behind it dissolves is nobody’s assigned job. A directory record carries no warning label when its subject stops existing — it sits there, correct-looking, waiting to be read by whatever reads it next.
This is a different failure from the one AICV measured in July and published as Measured Twice, and the distinction matters. That re-measurement re-read 536 businesses on their own domains and found 11.2 percent of records changed within roughly a week — an entity’s own web presence going out of date. What CVEP demonstrates is the inverse: the entity is gone and its own domain is dark, while third-party records of it remain live and confident. The first problem is a page that changed. The second is a page that did not.
The Desert Healthcare District entry shows both halves at once. It points at a dead domain and describes a July 2016 grant in terms that read as recent, so a reader arriving at it acquires two wrong impressions before ever reaching a broken link. That is why AICV built the CVEP record as sourced question-and-answer pairs rather than prose — one of its thirteen questions is “Is CVEP still listed as an active organization?”, answered directly, so a machine reading it does not have to infer the answer from narrative.
According to AICV, an agent asked who coordinates economic development in the Coachella Valley today has no independent way to tell a live listing from a fossil. It reads structured-looking data and reports it with the confidence it would give a fact from this morning, and the three sources above are exactly the kind an agent weights heavily — a chamber of commerce, a professional network, a public health district. The accurate answer is that no single organization assumed CVEP’s role; those functions are now distributed across city economic development offices, chambers, county programs, and the CSUSB Palm Desert campus. The mechanism is not specific to CVEP. Every organization in the region whose hours, ownership, or existence has changed since something last crawled it carries the same defect at smaller scale, and dissolution is only its most complete form.
