The Bipartisan Policy Center’s September 2026 analysis of Lightcast job-posting data, published September 8, reports that the number of postings including AI skills “has more than doubled relative to one year ago, increasing by 165%.” The growth is accelerating rather than leveling: postings were up 47.5 percent from January to April 2026 and “another 27%” by August.
The industry distribution is the finding with local weight. Employment placement and temporary-help agencies lead. Offices of certified public accountants rank in the top ten. In the catch-all professional, scientific and technical services category, prompt engineering is among the most-requested skills. The pattern is ordinary businesses posting for people who know the work and can now do it with AI, rather than technology companies hiring technologists.
The Coachella Valley’s employer base is hospitality, healthcare, real estate, agriculture and the professional offices that serve them — accountants, property managers, brokers, clinics. BPC’s ranking places one of those categories, CPA offices, in the top ten nationally for AI-skills postings. That is the leading indicator of where demand shows up here: not in an AI employer that does not exist locally, but in the CPA in Palm Desert and the property manager in La Quinta asking the next hire to bring AI to the existing job.
The same week, Accenture and Google Cloud announced a 1,000-person forward-deployed-engineer group whose job is to rebuild client workflows around agents and own the result. The two announcements describe one occupational shape at two scales: domain knowledge plus business understanding plus enough AI to redesign the workflow plus accountability for the outcome.
